This tutorial defines overlapping and non-overlapping events, and then walks through several examples to classify events. So first off, an overlapping event is an event that shares one or more outcomes. So they're overlapping, so they're crossing over each other.
So when you overlap, there are things that are falling into both of them or things that are underneath both of them, so that they're sharing that there. And then they're also events that can occur at the same time. So because they overlap, they're things that are happening at the same time.
On the other hand, we have non-overlapping events. Sometimes these are referred to as mutually exclusive. So if one thing is happening, the other thing cannot be happening. They don't have any outcomes that are shared. You cannot happen at the same time and they cannot be independent.
So for mutually exclusive, if you have one thing happening, the other thing is not shared. There's no outcomes that are the same between the two events.
Now for example, being a Monday and being a Sunday-- are these overlapping events or non-overlapping? Can you be a Monday and be Sunday at the same time? No, that's not possible. It can't be Monday and Sunday-- it's one or the other. So these events are mutually exclusive.
A set of cards, could you be a five and be a king? No, it's impossible to have a card that's a five and a king, so those are mutually exclusive. Being a five is mutually exclusive from being a king.
Here, being a Monday and being a weekday. Could it be Monday and a weekday? Yes, it is possible to be Monday and be a weekday. In fact, every Monday is a weekday, so these are overlapping events.
Being a five and being a club. Is it possible to be five and the club? Yes, there is a five of clubs. So this is also a set of overlapping events.
Now when you're overlapping, sometimes the whole event is going to be inside the other one. Every Monday is a weekday. Sometimes, it's not going to be that way. Every five isn't a club, every club isn't a five.
That's OK, as long as they have something that's shared, as long as there is a five of clubs, a Monday that is a weekday, then they are considered overlapping. If they don't share anything, then it's mutually exclusive.
This has been your tutorial on overlapping and non-overlapping, also known as mutually exclusive events.
