Percent by mass refers to the parts by mass of a solute per 100 parts by mass of solution. In other words, it is the ratio of the mass of solute to the mass of the solution. Since it is percent by mass, this ratio should be multiplied by 100%. The formula would be:
For instance a 30.0% aqueous solution of benzene, contains 30.0 g of benzene dissolved in 100 of solution. This solution is composed of 30.0 g of benzene in 70.0 g of water.
