Plants

Author: Nathan Lampson

Plants are the main energy producers on earth.  Much like power stations, plants produce energy.  The energy produced by plants is made by a process called photosynthesis.  Plants use carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water to produce oxygen and sugar.

Within the domain Eukarya, plants are found within a kingdom of organisms classified as Plantae.  In order to classified as a plant, organisms must possess certain characteristics.

Multicellular

Organisms in the Plantae kingdom are composed of multiple cells.

Eukaryote

The cells that make up plants are complex.  Containing no nucleus or organelles, plants are considered eukaryotes.

Autotroph

Plants produce their own food without consuming other organisms.  Structures known as chloroplasts inside plant cells synthesize sugars using inorganic molecules and sunlight.
