Preview a poem and read it aloud a few times. Reading a poem aloud a few times can help you get an overall feel for the language, rhyme, and rhythm of the poem.

Visualize the images, clarify words and phrases. Visualizing is when
the author paints a picture in your head.

Evaluate the poem's theme, and allow your understanding to grow.

The Power of Poetry

Listen to the "Power of Poetry" by Dana Gioia. Then choose a few other poems to listen to. Notice rhythmic patterns, rhymes, and alliteration. Visualize the images. Evaluate the poem's theme. Ask yourself, what message is the poet trying to send or help you understand? Does it relate to your life in any way?
