Hi, everyone. My name is Mario. I'd like to welcome you to our first lesson, which is going to be the principles overview. Now as the title says, this is just going to be an overview, so we'll talk about what the principles are and why they're important. And then, we'll tackle each one individually in its own lesson. So feel free in this lesson to pause, fast forward, and rewind at your own pace. And when you're ready to go, let's get started.
Let's begin by defining principles. Principles are rules used for the application of elements. And, as I mentioned, we will breeze over what those elements are, and then expand on them separately later on. So what are these elements to which these alleged rules are applied, you say? Well, they are unity, balance, contrast, scale, proximity, rhythm, and emphasis. OK, I got it. But why do I care, you might be asking-- and that's a fair question. Why do you care?
Well, it's important to know what makes a poster or painting or drawing so effective. Granted, like anything in design, art is strictly subjective. So you might be thinking-- well, I might not think that this painting that follows all the principles is as nice as this other one. And that's OK. Different works of art and design will speak to different people, but it's good to be able to identify the pieces that make great works of art to fully understand their construction.
And if you don't like a piece of art work, then you at least have the understanding and vocabulary to point out why a particular piece of work isn't very effective or working for you. At the very least, you can go into your local museum with your friend, and scratch that chin and deconstruct a piece of artwork, and then show off to your friend on how knowledgeable you are about the principles of design.
So that about wraps up this short lesson. We'll end with our key term for this lesson, which again was principles-- which are the rules used for the application of the elements. I hope you've enjoyed this quick lesson. I look forward to sharing more about the elements that make up the principles. My name is Mario, and I'll see you next lesson.
