What's Covered

Welcome to today’s lesson on what the principles are and why they're important. Specifically, this lesson will look at:

  1. Defining Principles
  2. Why Principles Are Important

1. Defining Principles

Principles are rules used for the application of elements.

Term to Know

    • Principles
    • Principles are rules used for the application of elements.

So, the elements to which these rules are applied are unity, balance, contrast, scale, proximity, rhythm, and emphasis.

2. Why Principles Are Important

It's important to know what makes a poster or painting or drawing so effective. Granted, like anything in design, art is strictly subjective. So you might be thinking-- well, I might not think that this painting that follows all the principles is as nice as this other one. And that's OK.

Different works of art and design will speak to different people, but it's good to be able to identify the pieces that make great works of art to fully understand their construction.

If you don't like a piece of artwork, then you at least have the understanding and vocabulary to point out why a particular piece of work isn't very effective or working for you. At the very least, you can go into your local museum with your friend, and scratch that chin and deconstruct a piece of artwork, and then show off to your friend on how knowledgeable you are about the principles of design.

Summary

That concludes today’s lesson on what the principles such as unity and balance and why they are so important.
