R-Controlled Vowels

R-Controlled Vowels

Author: Heidi Buys

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to correctly spell five words that contain the r-controlled vowels ‘ar’, ‘or’, ‘ir’, ‘er’ and ‘ur’.

In today’s phonics lesson, we are going to continue to discuss R-controlled vowels.  When a vowel is followed by an r, the r changes the sound that the vowel makes.  The vowel is called an r-controlled vowel. We like to refer to the “r” as the “bossy r” because the r “bosses” the vowel to make a new sound.  We will review the R-controlled vowels 'ar' and 'or'.  We will also learn about 'ir', 'er' and 'ur'.
