Research Strategies

In this tutorial you are going get a bit of a refresher on some Google Search strategies help make your research time more efficient. The refresher is the slideshow at the beginning of the tutorial. From there we are going to show you four sites that are commonly used to help research historical times and eras. The three sites are SmithsonianSource, Gilder Lehrman, and the Library of Congress.

Your skill objective is to use the tutorial videos to learn how to use 2 different online research sites.

The content objective is to develop 3 potential topics for your Extravaganza!!?! research work. Topics will be shared in small and large groups at the end of the period.

At the end of the tutorial is a presentation on Advanced Google Search Strategies. You have seen this presentation before, but it should be a helpful reminder of some of the strategies you can use to help make your search more efficient and yield better results.

Smithsonian Source

Smithsonian Source is one place students can visit to help find primary source material. There isn't a ton of resources, but it is easy to use and put together in a user friendly manner.

Gilder Lehrman

Gilder Lehrman is a site that we use as teachers when developing many of our primary resource guides. Features it has that would be beneficial to your learning are era timelines, primary sources, and good overviews of historical eras.

Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is a wonderful resource to use when looking for primary sources. The LOC can be a bit overwhelming with so much information, but this tutorial should help guide you to two places within the LOC that have information you need, delivered in a manner that is not too overwhelming.
