Making Copies and Setting Up your Printer

The video shows you how to make copies and the pdf will walk you through setting up your printer. This will only work in the buildings that you work. If you have trouble, which many people do, please ask!

Access to Youtube, etc...

To gain access to Youtube, Facebook and Twitter, along with other blocked sites, you will need a Static IP. The best way to get a static IP is to ask Larry at larry.chaney@mcpherson.com.  Remember to tell him which building you are at.

If possible, connect your computer to an ethernet cable - you will always get the fastest network connection when you are wired to an ethernet cable versus using a Wi-Fi access point.
You must perform these steps from within each building where you work.  If you work in multiple buildings, you will need to repeat these steps with the Static IP Address you receive for each building - a Static IP Address for one building will not work in any other buildings, and it will only work inside the USD 418 network.

Configuring a Static IP for an Ethernet Cable Connection:
1.  From the menu bar, select the Wi-Fi icon and choose Open Network Preferences.

2.  Select Ethernet if it is connected.  If you do not have an Ethernet connection, go to step 9, Configuring a Static IP for a Wi-Fi Connection.

3.  Change the Location to Edit Locations...   (Note:  If the screen is locked you may have to click on the lock button at the bottom left corner and enter your password to unlock the screen.)

4.  Click the + button to add a new location.  Using your building name, name the new location Static IP-Building (e.g.,Static IP-MHS, Static IP-EES).  Click the Done button when finished.

5.  You may see the following message.  Click the + button in the lower left corner to add an Ethernet service.

6.  Add a new Ethernet service as shown.

7.  Change Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address, and enter your assigned Static IP Address in the IP Address field as shown in this picture, and then click the Apply button in the bottom right corner

8.  The Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server, and Search Domains will be automatically completed for you - each building has different numbers so your screen may not look like this.  Do not add those numbers manually.
This completes the process for configuring a Static IP for an ethernet connection.

Configuring a Static IP for a Wi-Fi Connection:
9.  Unplug your Ethernet cable if it is connected.  From the menu bar, turn the Wi-Fi on, choose the USD 418 wireless network, and choose Open Network Preferences.

10.  Select Wi-Fi.  Change the Location to the Static IP location you previously created for an ethernet connection in step 4 above and then skip to step 13.

11.  Change the Location to Edit Locations...   (Note:  If the screen is locked you may have to click on the lock button at the bottom left corner and enter your password to unlock the screen.)

12.  Click the + button to add a new location.  Using your building name, name the new location Static IP-Building (e.g.,Static IP-MHS, Static IP-EES).  Click the Done button when finished.

13.  You may see the following message.  Click the + button in the lower left corner to add a Wi-Fi service.

14.  Add a new Wi-Fi service as shown.

15.  Select Wi-Fi, your Static IP Location, and click on the Advanced button.

16.  Choose the TCP/IP tab.  Change Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address, and enter your assignedStatic IP Address in the IP Address field as shown in this picture, and then click the OK button in the bottom right corner.  The Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server, and Search Domains will be automatically completed for you - do not add those numbers manually.

17.  Click the Apply button on the Network window.
This completes the process for configuring a Static IP for a Wi-Fi connection.

Test your Static IP:
You have now configured your computer to use your assigned Static IP Address.  To make sure it works, try going to a website that is normally blocked to students during school hours, such as YouTube.com.
WARNING:  Static IPs will not work outside of the school district network.  If you find that you can't connect at home, change your Location to Automatic.
You can easily switch from an Automatic IP to your Static IP by choosing it from the menu bar.

If you switch to the Automatic location, you will automatically receive a Dynamic IP Address from our DHCP server, just like all the student computers.  When you have a Dynamic IP Address your computer will be filtered in the same way as student computers.
