what's covered
In this lesson, you will learn how knowledge and application of sociological principles strengthen your self and social awareness and relationship building skills. Specifically, this lesson will cover:
  1. Skills in the Unit
  2. Importance of Self and Social Awareness and Relationship Building

1. Skills in the Unit

In this unit, you’ll review the key components of your self and social awareness skill and your relationship building skill. You’ll learn how these skills allow people from diverse cultures to come together, exchange ideas, and productively engage in society. You will also consider how the skills of self and social awareness and relationship building can help people move past bias and their own limited perspectives to see things in new ways.

In particular, you will focus on the following:

  1. Self and Social Awareness
    1. Understanding of your own culture and norms helps you understand yourself and recognize your biases
  2. Relationship Building
    1. Having knowledge of others’ cultural norms enables you to relate to them and work productively with them

2. Importance of Self and Social Awareness and Relationship Building

You will examine your cultural norms, origins, and biases in several aspects of your life, such as the ways in which you interact with others and even how you eat at a restaurant. This awareness will help you understand yourself, understand others, and build healthy relationships. Our culture is not just tied to the nation in which we live; it’s an expression of everything that makes us who we are. By making an effort to learn about others, you can build stronger relationships in your personal life and career.

summary
Our culture influences every part of our life, yet we are so accustomed to it that we don’t notice it on a daily basis. When we encounter other norms, such as when we travel to another country, we may experience culture shock, making us more aware of how our norms affect our thoughts and behavior. By examining culture, we can reduce our biases, understand ourselves, and connect with others.
