Song Lyric Analysis

Song Lyric Analysis

Author: Beth Barsness
  1. Students will be able to identify and define the following concepts by analyzing a set of song lyrics: figurative language, imagery, symbolism, tone, meter, rhyme, allusion, etc.
  2. Students will be able to practice analytical skills by creating a poster project about a song of their choice.

This lesson will introduce students to the basic concepts of poetry analysis by examining popular song lyrics.  Students will select a song of their choice and annotate the lyrics on their own.  They will present a well-written paragraph interpreting the meaning of the song; and create a poster which illustrates their annotations.  If class time is available, students will present their songs and completed projects to the class.

Length of time needed: 3-4 class periods (45 minutes each)
