In the unit, Analyze the Difference Between Standards, Outcomes, and Competencies In Relation to the Curriculum, the learning objectives included, define standards, outcomes, and competencies; evaluate connections among standards, outcomes, competencies, and skills; and reflect on competency-based education.
We began with the learning objective of defining standards, outcomes, and competencies. We began by examining content standards, including the Common Core English language arts and mathematics standards, The Next Generation Science standards, and the national foreign language standards. We then looked at some skill-based standards, including the Historical Thinking Standards and the ISTE technology standards. With an understanding of both content and skill standards, we learned how to align outcomes, objectives, and competencies with multiple standards. Throughout these tutorials, you were encouraged to examine your own content standards, along with any skill standards that might apply to your classroom as well.
With an understanding of standards, outcomes, competencies, and skills, the next learning objective in this series was evaluating connections among standards, outcomes, competencies, and skills. You learned about the importance of clearly defined learning targets. And you saw examples of writing targets that meet the criteria of outcomes, competencies, and skills. Finally, you learned about the importance of writing, I can, statements. These statements use student-friendly language to clearly communicate learning goals with your students. Try posting your, I can, statements right on your classroom wall, in order to help students track their own progress and take ownership of their learning.
The final learning objective in this unit was reflecting on competency-based education. We emphasized the fact that CBE can be used to help facilitate flexible pacing as students work towards accomplishing their learning goals. We talked about aligning standards within competency-based education. And we reviewed that rubrics and proficiency skills can be used to determine varying levels of proficiency for students. Throughout our review of competency-based education, we kept in mind the fact that we were focusing on both skill standards and content standards and how our use of CBE principles, along with some other techniques such as differentiation and personalized learning, can help to create the best possible learning experience for students.
To recap, in this unit the learning objectives included, defining standards, outcomes, and competencies; evaluating the connections among standards, outcomes, competencies, and skills; and reflecting on competency-based education. With an overall focus on standards, we were really able to see the connections among all of these different types of learning goals and how they can be used within the context of competency-based education to increase, not only student performance, but also students' ownership of their own learning.
So here's a chance for you to stop and reflect. Are you able to align your outcomes, objectives, and competencies to both content standards and practice standards?
