Hi, my name is Ashley. Now that we have finished up the unit on applying universal design for learning framework and instructional design and assessment, let's review the main components.
There's so much that we've learned in this unit. We discussed the principles of the UDL learning model, which is the universal design for learning. We revised an existing lesson plan in order to meet the principles of UDL by using the UDLinks app and website. Also, we reflected on the UDL lesson that was revised and how its revisions will better meet the needs of all diverse learners.
The universal design for learning model consisted of three principles-- principle 1; providing multiple means of representation, principle 2; providing multiple means of action and expression, and principal 3; providing multiple means of engagement. We looked at all three principles and the guidelines that accompany each. We reviewed specific strategies on how to incorporate each principle into your classroom.
For an example, in order to provide multiple means of action and expression, the teacher should give students the opportunity to move around the classroom and interact with assistive technology and other students. In order to address principal 3, teachers should have many different ways to engage students. And one way is by giving students choice.
These principles also help us address how we can assist our students in becoming expert learners. After learning the principles of UDL, we were able to incorporate these and to revising a lesson.
We revised an existing lesson to meet the principles of audio. We used resources such as the UDLinks and the CAST website and UDL Studio and UDL Exchange to help us come up with ideas and suggestions when incorporating the UDL principles in instruction. This was very helpful, because we were able to apply what we discussed about the principles to a lesson.
Lastly, after revising the lesson, we discuss ways you can reflect on your lesson to ensure that the UDL principles were integrated successfully and were beneficial to the students. One method is the think aloud. With the think aloud, you can ask yourself a series of questions that help you reflect on the lesson.
For example, ask yourself, what assessment strategies should be changed? Or how should I revise the goals? Another method of reflection is using a plus minus delta. This tool is very helpful when analyzing what went well, what did not, and suggestions for improvements.
So let's recap the main points of this unit. Universal design for learning is a learning model that offers a flexible approach to teaching, creating an equal opportunity for all students. We talked about the three principles of UDL and the guidelines that accompany each of them. Our discussion on UDL principles helped us greatly when revising an existing lesson that was aligned with the principles. Resources such as UDLinks, UDL Studio and Exchange and the CAST website were very helpful in providing examples of lessons and materials to assist with incorporating UDL principles.
Congratulations you have completed this unit, applying universal design for learning frameworks and instructional design and assessment. So now you're on your way to becoming an expert on universal design for learning and implementing its principles in your planning and instruction. I hope these lessons have been beneficial for you. As always, please refer back to lessons and the additional resources sections to provide more information on how to implement these skills.
