Hello, and thank you for joining me for Summary of Implementing In-Person and Virtual Collaborative Opportunities. By the end of today's tutorial, we will be able to answer the following essential questions. What were the learning objectives for this unit? How are they connected? And why do they matter?
The learning objectives included analyze the purpose of collaborative learning and PBL, writing, creating, and producing. Analyze collaborative learning connected to social learning and networked learning theories, create a PBL lesson that uses in-person and virtual collaboration, and reflect on how collaborative learning will support student achievement and growth in your classroom.
If you'll remember, for analyzing the purpose of collaborative learning and PBL writing, creating, and producing, we looked at the definitions of problem-based, project-based, and personalized learning. We also looked at how these connected to the ISTE Standards. And we looked at the connection between PBL and the 4 C's of collaborative learning.
For analyzing collaborative learning and how it's connected to social learning and networked learning theories, we looked at the five components of social learning theory. We also looked at the role of reciprocal determinism. And we explored networked and situated learning.
Then we created a PBL lesson that used in-person and virtual collaboration. We used understanding by design as the framework for this lesson. And we explored the different technologies that are available to us to facilitate this collaboration. We also looked at social learning, since collaboration is a social construct. Then we reflected on how collaborative learning supported student achievement and growth in the classroom.
We did this by having the students participate in a plus/minus/delta reflection activity, by evaluating ourselves using Marzano's Teacher Evaluation system, specifically the personal performance domain, and by working with peers to receive feedback. So why do these objectives matter? Why did we talk about them in this unit?
We talked about them because collaboration is a way of life. In every job you have, you will collaborate with people. We also talked about them, because virtual collaboration is becoming the norm. As we stem out into more international business and working with people from different areas, we need to be able to virtually collaborate to cross borders. We created a lesson so that we could transfer purpose and theory into practice. And we reflected, so that we can be more intentional practitioners.
So how are these things all connected? Well, we started out by looking at the purpose of collaborative learning and PBL. And we moved on to looking at the theory behind them. So we'd note that there is some research that supports these ideas. Then we implemented them by creating a lesson. And lastly, we reflected on them to see if what we were doing worked or not, and then reevaluate.
In today's tutorial, we talked about what the learning objectives were for this unit, how they were connected, and why they mattered. Thank you for joining me for this unit and happy teaching.
