Hi. My name is Ashley, and today's lesson is titled Teacher Standards and Their Relevance for Teacher Evaluation. In today's lesson, we'll review the role of teacher evaluation of standards. Next, we'll look at the InTASC Model Core Teacher Standards and the connection it has with the teacher evaluation process. Lastly, we'll look at the National Board Teacher certification and the standards that are used for that process. Let's go ahead and begin.

What is the role of teacher evaluation and standards? According to Linda Darling-Hammon, a professor of education at Stanford, "the development and use of standard space evaluations of practice, combined with student learning evidence developed by teachers, seem to be associated with improvements in practice."

Professional teacher standards can evaluate teacher quality as a component of teacher certification. Teacher standards are a crucial piece for assessments, practices, and portfolio requirements for National Board Teacher certifications. Professional teacher standards are the foundation for rubrics used in many teacher evaluation models across the country.

What is the InTASC Model Core Teacher Standards? In 2011, the InTASC Model Core Professional Teacher Standards were published by the Council for the Chief State School Officers. These standards helped form professional practice standards mandated by No Child Left Behind and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act requirement for teacher evaluation to determine teacher effectiveness.

The InTASC standards consist of four domains and eight standards. The Danielson model and Marzano model, as well as many other state professional teaching standards, use InTASC to develop their evaluation models.

Let's take a look at the InTASC standards. The learner and learning, which involves learning environment and how students learn. The next domain is content knowledge, which involves the knowledge of information that's being presented. Instructional practice involves the delivery of instruction and assessing what has been taught. And lastly, professional responsibility, which involves growth in the profession of teaching.

What are the National Board Teacher Standards? Many teachers decide to improve themselves professionally and become Nationally Board Certified. This process allows teachers to become reflective educators, and identifies them as effective in their area of certification.

In some cases, teachers use the National Board Certification process as part of their professional goals. Research shows that teachers who are Nationally Board Certified have higher levels of student achievement compared to teachers who are not certified.

The National Board established and adheres to their own teaching standards, which are related to state standards and InTASC standards. These standards vary according to the 25 certification areas, but they all adhere to the same five core propositions. Let's take a look at those now.

Proposition 1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning. Proposition 2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. Proposition 3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. Proposition 4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. And proposition 5. Teachers are members of learning communities.

Let's recap what we have discussed in today's lesson. Professional teacher standards play a role in teacher certification, and they are the foundation for rubrics that are used the most teacher evaluation models. The InTASC Model Core Teacher Standards are another set of professional practice standards formed in 2011. Lastly, we discussed National Board Certification and the five core propositions that are adhered to.
