No one saw the COVID-19 pandemic coming. No one could have predicted it, and when it did come, it took the world by storm. All around the world, everything has stopped indefinitely. And even though some sectors are slowly reopening, no one knows for sure when or if everything will return to normal due to the pandemic. Projects have paused, workplaces closed, and schools have been locked, keeping students stuck at home. But just because students are stuck at home doesn’t mean the learning process will have to end.

Education has to continue—to triumph over the novel coronavirus, one way or another—and many schools have found a solution online, through e-learning and through video calls with teachers. This has proven to be the next best thing, for it is the easiest way to keep the students safe and learning, and it has been working fine in many big cities. For example, in New York, over 500,000 laptops and tablets were delivered to students, in a bid to prepare for online learning to ensure that the students had the new learning materials amidst the pandemic. However, not all students are so fortunate to access online services for students. In some other countries where they are unable to supply their students with the necessary electronic devices, the learning process has been somewhat stagnant—this is, of course, due to a lack of proper preparation.

Students who participate in the home-learning have been having some trouble adjusting to the new system, mostly because this is the first time they have had to undergo the learning process and have not really had practices before. These students have reported that learning from home is more stressful than learning in classrooms with their mates. This problem arises from the fact that when they learn at home, they become alone. They miss all the things that make school fun, like socializing and other extra-curricular activities, and all they are stuck with is assignments and classwork, over and over, making learning tiresome and making the workload heavier than that of regular classes. Not all cities are as fortunate as New York. In parts of the world where the grass is not so green, the learning process is very tricky, leaving many students unable to receive quality education. It is true that in some cities that have seen the climax of the pandemic and reported that the number of COVID-19 cases is steadily declining every day, have already begun opening their schools. In Lagos, schools have begun letting children learn, but of course, strict guidelines have been put in place to contain the spread of the virus. For example, no child is allowed into school without a face mask. Pictorial charts have been put on the school walls to remind the children to keep their masks on, and water and hand sanitizers have also been made available for the students. Without all the guidelines adhered to, parents can rest assured of their children’s safety.

However, for cities still enduring a steady rise in the number of cases, they are not so lucky. Schools remain shut down, and students remain stuck at home, obeying the rules put in place, as well as the quarantine policies. This put them in a very tight position until the COVID-19 pandemic dies down. In situations like this, governments ought to make extra efforts to support and fund their education sector and look to building the good solidarity amongst schools of the state, including building networks between the public schools and the international schools to share their study processes for online learning, as well as their experiences.
