Hi, my name is Ashley, and today's lesson is titled The Role of Reflection and Self-assessment in Teacher Evaluation. In today's lesson, we'll discuss the role of self-assessment and reflection and review how observation feedback is processed.
What is the role of self-assessment and reflection? Teacher self-evaluation plays a vital role in the teacher evaluation process. The self-evaluation is the starting point which assists in establishing a professional growth goals and professional development plans. This self-evaluation also helps to prepare teachers for the pre- and post-conference with the evaluator. The self-assessment or reflection should also include a review of the professional practice rubric, which is included in the teacher evaluation model.
In order for self-assessment and reflection to be effective, it should occur three times a year at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. This way, you can monitor your progress and compare your observation feedback that you receive from your evaluator. It may be during the self-assessment that you realize that you need additional support, so don't hesitate to request professional development in areas of interest or assistance where growth may be needed.
And lastly, peer feedback can be useful when completing a self-assessment and reflecting on your teaching practices. Many templates for self-evaluation are offered through state and professional organizations. Let's take a look at a few.
On page 24, of the Arizona Teacher Evaluation Model, you'll find self-reflection questions to assist you in preparing for your post-conference. The Delaware Teacher Evaluation Model offers a self reflection model for continuous growth and improvement, as well as helpful tools for preparing for pre- and post-conferences.
The article titled "How Teachers Learn-- Fostering Reflection" written by Lana M. Danielson explains the importance and purpose of self-evaluation reflection in the teacher evaluation process. And lastly, the Kentucky Department of Education offers teachers specific guidelines for self-reflection on their website in addition to tools teachers may use for planning professional growth. How should observation feedback be processed? It's important to know during this evaluation process that your evaluators are not looking for perfection but, instead, growth as a professional. To properly show growth, consider carefully the feedback that is given by the evaluator, and use it to make improvements. Request support for areas of need, and demonstrate that you are working in those areas.
You can do this by attending workshops or professional development opportunities or observing veteran teachers. Use the evaluator's feedback to build your reflection of yourself. Seek the advice of a peer mentor that may help you use your evaluator's feedback effectively and provide additional feedback to help you work on your improvement strategies. Recording yourself doing a lesson is always an option to analyze what you observe as you play back your lesson.
Let's recap what we have discussed in today's lesson. Self-assessment and reflection play a major role in the teacher evaluation process. The self-evaluation helps teachers prepare for the pre- and post-conferences. States and school districts offer templates to use to assist with this process. Also, use your evaluator's feedback to make improvements where needed. Your evaluator will want to see that you have taken their feedback into consideration and that you're working to make improvements.
Begin to self-reflect on your strengths and weaknesses. What areas need improvement? Make a plan for improvement.
