Time Management for Physical Education

Overview of Time and Classroom Management

Time management is very important in a PE setting. Focusing too much on one area such as introduction or fitness can lead to not enough explanation time or activity time. A good way to avoid this is to plan out everything you are going to do in your lesson for the day. It is helpful to rehearse your lesson, actually taking the time to say exactly what you are going to say in class. Another way to manage your time effectively is to have good classroom management. Being able to control your students will cut back on lost time. This video shows several ways to control your classroom to conserve valuable time.

Classroom Time Managment

It is important to know how much time should be spent on each activity. For a 30 minute class, this should be the time allotted for each section of the class:

  • Intro: 2-3 minutes
  • Fitness: 5-8 minutes
  • Lesson Focus: 15 minutes
  • Game: 5-8 minutes
  • Closure: 2-3 minutes

Managing a Classroom

Several good ways to manage a PE classroom setting are to have hot spots where students go to when you tell them to, to have them get down on one knee when you say freeze, to challenge them so that they want to succeed and not goof off, to have a reward system, and telling them what to do before you say when to do it.
