What are Transition Words?

What is a transition word?

A transition is a word that shows change, or how two sentences relate to each other.

The colors in the word shows transitioned from dark blue to light blue.

When you see the word transition, what other similar words come to mind?  Perhaps transportation?  transfer? transfiguration? translator? transverse?  All of these words have something to do with change

When writing, writers show how to sentences relate to each other.  Transition words can be categorized into five main groups:  similarity, contrast, addition, illustration and cause and effect.

Transition words increase the flow and cohesiveness of paragraphs and papers.  They decrease a reader's confusion and "choppy" appearance of what is happening within the text.

Transition words improve writing by clearly conveying similarities between topics, establishing differences between topics, providing additional details, creating a picture, and explaining how one topic may incfluence another.

How can transition words improve my writing?

How can transition words improve my writing?

Read the paragraph below without transition words:

Harry Potter is my favorite literary character.  He is clever.  He is brave.  He is a good friend.  He didn’t know he was a wizard.  He found out on his birthday.  Hogwarts sent him an invitation to study magic at the school.  Harry made two great friends and they had many adventures.  The three of them are on the good side.  They are fighting evil characters, like Lord Voldermort.

Pretty boring, huh?

Now, read the same paragraph with transition words:

Harry Potter is my favorite literary character.  First, he is clever.  Second, he is brave.  Third, he is a good friend.  In the beginning, he didn’t know he was a wizard, but then he found out on his birthday.  Consequently, Hogwarts sent him an invitation to study magic.  As a result, Harry made two great friends and they had many adventures.  The three of them are on the good side.  However, not all the characters are good, and Harry fights against Lord Voldermort.

The paragraph with transition words is less choppy, thus making it easier to read.  Transitions help the ideas to flow better and alert the reader to the relationship between ideas .
