To introduce and discuss the proper use of topic sentences and transitional phrases.
Transitions and topic sentences are part of the writing process. This packet discusses what they are and how to use them. There are two informative slideshows, two instructional videos and a text portion to aid in your understanding of the topic!
What is a topic sentence? A topic sentence is a sentence (generally the first sentence of the paragraph) that summarizes the main idea of the paragraph.
What is a transitional phrase? Transitional words and phrases provide coherence by helping the reader to understand the relationship between topics - in this case: paragraphs. A transitional word or phrase is going to signal to the reader that there is going to be a shift in ideas/discussion, but that still applies to the topic as a whole.
Example of transitional phrases and words:
- however
- on the other hand
- nevertheless
- in contrast
- furthermore
- therefore
This video provides excellent information on how to make a transition.
