Volcanoes

Author: Amanda Soderlind

Volcanoes are a type of natural disaster that happens when the magma under the earth is pushed to the surface causing lava flows on earth’s surface. The cause of this is related to plate tectonics. The earth’s crust is divided up into several large and small plates. When the edges of the pates interact with each other they can cause events such as volcanoes or earthquakes. Therefore, it makes sense that volcanoes are found in areas near plate boundaries. Volcanoes can be very dangerous by destroying cities, affecting surrounding landscapes, causing fatalities, impacting air quality of the affected area and emitting dangerous gases and ash into the air. A volcanic eruption also produces types of igneous rock that are used in many industries for various purposes, builds islands and adds land mass. The three types of volcanoes are shield, composite and cinder cone.
