A tutorial to explain how Volcanoes are created.
CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RI.5.7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. (5-ESS1-1)
Objective: By the end of this lesson students will be able to describe what a Volcano is, how it forms and identify four different types of volcanoes.
Portions of these materials have been incorporated under the Fair Use Guidelines and are
restricted from further use.
The video below will provide information on what a volcano is and how they are formed.

There are four Types of Volcanoes.
#1 The Shield Volcano
Shield volcanoes are large volcanoes with gently sloping sides. In fact, the largest volcanoes on Earth are shield volcanoes.
Shield Volcanoes are built up slowly over time from a very stable central summit vent. Flow after flow pours out of the vent, slides down through the slopes of the volcano, and builds up its size.
Shield volcanoes can be found around the world. In northern California and Oregon.

Cinder cone volcanoes have steep sides with a bowl-shaped crater at the top. After multiple eruptions, the volcano forms into a cone shape, forming the steep slopes.

Composite Volcanoes are the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
Lava domes form when there is slow eruption of very thick lava, or multiple eruptions of different kinds of lava. Lava does not erupt through the surface, instead the material builds up underneath the ground which causes the lava dome to form.
The sides of lava domes are very steep, and can cause rock-slides.
