Wave Speed

Author: Nathan Lampson

The wavelength of a wave can be calculated by dividing the speed of a wave by its frequency.

wavelength = speed (m/s) / frequency (hz)

If a wave is traveling at 990 m/s at a frequency of 110 hz, what is its wavelength?

speed = 990m/s

frequency = 110hz

wavelength = 990m/s / 110hz

wavelength = 9m

The speed of a wave can be calculated by dividing the waves wavelength by its frequency.  The wavelength of a wave is the distance from peak to peak.  The frequency of a wave is the number of waves pass a given point in a set amount of time.

wave speed (m/s) = wavelength (m) / frequency (hz)

If a wave has a wavelength of 9m and a frequency of 50hz, what is its speed?

wavelength = 9m

frequency = 50hz

wave speed (m/s) = 9m / 50hz

wave speed = 0.18 m/s

The wave has a speed of 0.18 m/s.
