1. Introduction to Course Goals

This course provides fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in a college algebra course. The content covered will be applied to everyday as well as professional and academic situations. The knowledge and skills you develop in this course will be helpful in a variety of fields, including science, economics, and business.

Algebraic thinking is used in everyday situations, such as when comparing different vehicles to purchase or whether or not you should refinance your home loan.

2. What to Expect from the Instructor

The instructor, Colleen Atakpu, has been a teacher and a tutor of mathematics for 10 years. She has also created other online mathematics tutorial videos. She will provide quality math instruction using short but direct tutorials. Some of the topics in these tutorials include:

  • Finding a percentage to analyze survey data
  • Solving linear inequalities to determine how much income you need to cover your bills
  • Writing an equation to analyze a cell phone plan
  • Finding the intersection point of two lines to determine the optimal quantity and price for a certain product produced

The goal of these examples in each tutorial is that they are meaningful and relatable and will show you how to apply the content to different situations.
