A base is a substance that increases the OH- ion concentration in a solution.  On the pH scale, a base is a solution with a pH of greater than 7.


Properties of bases:

pH > 7

Bitter taste

Feel slippery (soapy) to the touch

Neutralized by acids

Raise the concentration of hydroxide (OH-) ions in a solution
