World's Religions Unit 1 Beginning the Journey

Author: Jon McGurran

D1 Setting the Stage

Instead of questions, what I want you to do is take notes on the video. (Good notes)

As well as the basic notes, I want you to list 3 things you found interesting and 2 questions you have about the content. (Either something you did not understand, or something you wish to discuss more.) I also want a brief summary of the lesson.

This reflects the more conceptional aspect of the class.

We will typically have a reading we are doing during class. Right now I want you to read

Nostra aetate (Declaration on the Relation of the church to Non-Christian Religions)

http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_decl_19651028_nostra-aetate_en.html

For tonight, just read paragraph 1 (They are numbered, stop at 2)
Outline it the same way you would do with the podcast. These notes will be turned in as well. We will discuss this in class.

Email if you have any questions.

D2 Why study the World's Religions?

Unit 1 Study Guide

These questions cover the major concepts for this unit. You still need to study your notes, but I want to put special emphasis on these questions.

If you only do these questions but not study your notes, you will struggle with the exam.

1. Briefly describe the religious diversity in our world today.

2. Why use the term "world's religions" rather than "world religions" in studying the various religious traditions?

3. Where did the word "religion" originate? Why do you think it is so difficult to define "religion"?

4. What attitude is asked of us in studying some of the world's religions? Explain

5. What makes a class on the world's religions different from other religion classes?

6. What are some reasons for studying the world's religions?

7. Relate some of the ways in which Popes John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI broke ground in the Catholic Church's relationship with other religious traditions.

8. Why is interreligious dialogue a duty of all Catholic Christians? In what way can a Catholic fulfill this duty?

9. What are the common elements or patterns we will be using in studying the world's religions?

I anticipate this unit to have 4 days and then a test. (It will be smaller test based on the size of the unit.)

1. Setting the stage

2. Why study the World's Religions

3. Setting the Context of Catholics in Dialogue.

4. Some Common elements or Patterns.

D3 Setting the Context of Catholics in Dialogue

1. Notes
2. 3 interesting points
3. 2 Questions
4. Summary

(There is no reading for tonight because this is longer then I would like due to the overview of history)

Questions for Review on Nostra Aetate

You do not need to do these, but I would recommend looking at them and know them.

1. What is the purpose of this document? Why did they write it?

2. What are things that unite humanity?

3. What are the metaphysical questions that all people ask?

4. How are we connected to Hindus?

5. How are we connected to Buddhists?

6. How are we connected to Muslims?

7. How are we connected to Jews?

8. Does the Church believe in everything from these religions? What does she believe?

9. What is the message in the conclusion of the document?
