I am passionate about English, Literature, Poetry, Language, and Reading. I also like earth and space science, as well as anatomy and biology. I love hiking, origami, and traveling. More than anything I like to spend time reading or playing with my dog, Brekean. I like to think of teaching and tutoring as a partnership built between the educator and the student: we both have to come prepared with questions and an open mind to get the most out of our time together. I like hands-on learning, and the benefit of immediately applying newly learned skills. I've learned more from being wrong or making mistakes during the learning process than I have from getting it right the first time, which has taught me to value perseverance and creativity.
I'm proud to boast that my wonderful husband is a technology coordinator for a Minnesota school district, and Brock and I share 3 wonderful kids. Currently I stay home with our 2 youngest children, but for 10 years I taught middle and high school Language Arts classes also in Minnesota. Brock's passion for technology has become contagious in our household, and the way our 2 year old son can navigate an iPad is staggering. This "techy" exposure married with a love of language and literature has brought me to Sophia where I am excited to produce, share, and learn new insights in the English realm. I graduated with a B.S. degree from Bemidji State University and currently hold a license for Language Arts, 7-12 in Minnesota.
My name is Clayton Schanilec. I have focused on three different careers in my life so far. First I owned and operated a graphics business that specialized in prepping fiction and poetry manuscripts for small press publications. Then the travel bug bit me and I spent 8 years traversing the globe, performing as a traditional step-dancer. Family life beckoned, so I settled into a high school English teaching career that began in 1997 and continues today. Throughout it all I have always been a writer. Trained at the University of Iowa's undergraduate Fiction Writer's Workshop, I honed my craft. I published several short stories but am still awaiting that big break with a novel. Most of my publishing has been with newspaper feature stories in the Twin Cities where I reside. I still consider it a priority to spend at least an hour first thing in the morning working on my fiction. I am a single dad enjoying the presence of my two daughters half of the time: Eleanor, 13, and Emily, 8. They are bright lights in my life. I have mostly traded in the tap shoes for the fiddle and play often on weekends with my band, Poor Benny.
I am a teacher of English learners at a STEM elementary school in Minnesota. I am passionate about using technology to provide authentic and relevant ways for students to produce and interact with language.
Areas of focus are reading and writing.
