Bio

Ben grew up as the son of artists and educators in the rural mountains in Northeast, Georgia. He attended North Georgia University and Georgia Tech, earning degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, respectfully. After graduating in 1987, he worked as an engineer for E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. at manufacturing and R&D facilities in Mobile, Alabama; Columbia, South Carolina; Nashville, Tennessee; Santa Barbara, California, and Charleston, West Virginia. He earned a Masters in Teaching from Marshall University in 2006 and left the corporate world in 2007 to teach physics & mathematics Tri-County Early College High School in Murphy, NC. He married Hygie Starr of Greensboro, NC in September of 1989 (also an engineer with DuPont). They have no children, but do have several cats and a dog and currently live in a “green” home they designed as part of a sustainable farming community in Brasstown, NC. His personal hobbies include running triathlons and marathons, sea and whitewater kayaking, backpacking, fly-fishing, and cross-country & alpine skiing, bicycle touring (he is the author of two books on the subject). He also loves to cook, garden, bird watch, read, listen to good music and NOT watch television.
