For the past 20 years, I have been engaged as an educational researcher, evaluator and professor of educational policy. Areas of expertise include education reform, policy implementation and effectiveness, post-secondary attainment and socio-economic disadvantage. My publications address the social institutions and policies designed to promote educational advancement for students, especially the socially disadvantaged. Teaching and research associations over the past 20 years include the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, University of Minnesota and Stanford University. I hold a Ph. D. and M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. from Lawrence University.
I teach high school mathematics in Minnesota. I want to explore ways to use Sophia in my classroom.
Hi and thanks for checking out my profile! My name is Rachel and I've been a high school mathematics teacher for 7 years, specializing in Geometry and Statistic. I have been a state qualifying cross country coach, freshman mentor, tutor, ACT Prep instructor, and Junior/Senior class sponsor. My undergraduate degree (BS in Chemistry) is from the University of Tampa, and my graduate degree is from National-Louis University (MAT - specializing in secondary math and science education with a middle school endorsement). I worked as a cosmetic chemist for TreSemme prior to earning my teaching certificate. It didn't take long to learn that students are a lot more interesting and fun to work with than swatches of hair and batches of shampoo :) Not only do I love to teach, but I love to run, cook (and eat!), and I'm an avid scuba diver who loves to dive with sharks!
After cutting my teeth in political campaigns, I have pursued a career in education. I earned a master's degree in education leadership and transitioned to advocacy and public affairs work in the field of education. This work has included organizing high profile events, social media campaigns and websites to support STEM education and new education policies. I have also worked with a variety of organizations to award teacher grants, student scholarships and have been a frequent participant on education committees and workgroups with the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU), University of Minnesota and the National Governors Association.
I'm the Founder and co-creator of Sophia and I love to create new things. I have a deep passion for education and technology, and I spend a lot of time thinking about how they could come together more effectively. I earned my bachelor's degree in U.S. History from the University of Wisconsin and my MBA from the University of Minnesota. I'm also the proud father of three daughters who give me a lot of great feedback on how to improve Sophia. I hope you'll send me your thoughts and ideas about Sophia. You can also feel free to share your thoughts on education, technology, American history (my personal passions are presidential and immigration history), music, songwriting, or baseball. I’d love to hear from you. - Don
