Welcome to my profile! I am an English teacher and librarian at a private high school in Maryland. In 2008, I graduated with a bachelors degree in English Education from Mount Saint Mary's University. This May, I will graduate with a master's degree in School Librarianship from McDaniel College.
This past year, I was introduced to the concept of the flipped classroom. It is my goal to flip my classroom one lesson at a time. I plan to use Sophia.org to do this!
Greetings and thanks for visiting my profile. I am a lifelong lover of learning and teaching and I am thrilled to be a part of the Sophia community. My undergraduate degree is in English Literature from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, but I have taught a wide range of subjects including English, ESL, Mathematics, French, and test preparation. I have worked with students from the ages of 6 to 60, in a variety of settings across the country, from the classroom to the living room, in Oregon, California, Maryland, and Minnesota. My students have often joked that I am the consummate nerd because I love grammar, math, and taking tests, but my indefatigable love of learning does not stop there. Throughout my life I have been drawn to learn whatever I can get my hands on. I have been a costume design intern at a French opera, I have attended cooking school in Florence, and I am currently taking oil painting classes in Annapolis, Maryland. I value learning of all kinds so highly because I feel that every new skill that I learn opens my eyes to a new aspect of life. Thanks to my painting classes, I will never look at light, shadow, and color the same way again, and thanks to my costume design experience, I have learned the true power of the Pythagorean theorem! For the past four years I have been in the educational technology field, and most recently I have joined Sophia as the Manager of Content Development and Alignment. My experiences in education have taught me that each student learns differently and that learners benefit immensely from the opportunity to choose what they learn, how they learn, and how quickly they learn. I feel fortunate to be a part of company that embraces this philosophy and seeks to teach students as flexibly and as fluidly as students learn. In The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, William Blake wrote: If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern. This statement resonates deeply with what I feel to be the ultimate goal of teaching and learning. Our key aim as teachers and students should be to widen the chinks of our caverns, inch by inch, so that we can all see the world more brightly and clearly. I love the spirit of Sophia; I love the bravery of the idea that we can all teach and learn from each other, and that we can widen the doors of perception together. I am prou
I am the General Education Coordinator at the Blaine Campus of Rasmussen College. In addition to overseeing the campus's General Education program, I have taught the following courses: English Composition, Humanities, Creative Writing, Film Appreciation, Introduction to Literature, and Visual Communications in the Media. I hold an M.F.A in Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of Houston and a B.A. in English from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. My educational interests include exploring innovative strategies (particularly the use of video technology) for promoting creative and critical thinking in online and residential classrooms.
I'm a "Creative Realist" - a trained Economist with a passion for the arts, a true balance of right brain and left brain thinking. At the end of my collegiate career, I decided against a traditional path through the corporate world and focused my time and energy toward a career in music. I truly believe this experience taught me more about running a business and the power of marketing than any corporation could have. I had the fortunate opportunity to play music all over the country and run my own business (successfully) at the same time. Music is still a huge part of my life and who I am today, however I now share that passion with the web. Plain and simple, I love the internet. I believe it's the foundation for communication now, and in the future. It has revolutionized the way we communicate, do business, and share information.
I teach high school English. (And yes, I know that is a less-than-exciting sentence). When I'm not teaching, I spend my free time reading, working with the speech team, editing journalism stories, playing on my iPad (which I have affectionately named Paddington), and sailing.
My education includes a 7-12 language arts teaching degree, as well as a K-12 ESL endorsement. Currently, I am working in the special education field in a western suburb of Minneapolis, both as a teacher for behaviorally challenging middle schoolers and as a paraprofessional. I have also been an adult ESL volunteer/tutor for Hopkins Adult Education for 2 1/2 years (focusing on lower level learners & struggling readers), as well as more recently functioning as a substitute teacher there. I teach piano to six students and am active as a 3rd-6th grade AWANA leader in our church, as well as being the electronic keyboardist on our worship team. Prior to becoming a teacher/tutor/educator, I specialized in the field of desktop publishing/printing for 15 years. My passion is working with struggling readers, and I am considering pursuing a K-12 Reading License in the near future.
Co-founder of eduCanon. We just launched our platform on September 3rd and I'm looking to learn from the great educators on Sophia to see how we can make eduCanon work best for the flipped classroom. eduCanon is an online learning platform for teachers to build and share interactive video lessons. Teachers can take any video content on YouTube and make it more active through time-embedded formative assessments. eduCanon.com
