Grade(s): Middle School
I'm a lifelong learner and a grade 6 teacher in Burford, ON, Canada. Two years ago I discovered Twitter and with that the way I present education was totally revolutionized. Now the entire world is our classroom as we Twitter, Skype and Blog our way through the year. I've embraced the Flipped Classroom approach because it leads to an Inquiry and Project-Based Program that best suits our learners.
My Christian faith is at the core of my being and my wife and 3 teen-aged boys highlight my home life. In May I started running and on October 14, 2012 I excitedly competed in my first marathon.
I am currently in my 6th year at Fields Store Elementary in Waller, Texas. For the past four years I have taught 5th grade math and I have loved every minute of it! I am a big fan of finding new and innovative ways to bring technology into the classroom and have started Flipping my math classroom this year!! I am a junior high math teacher, an assistant varsity baseball coach and also serve as the junior high math league advisor at a Catholic school in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. I reside in south Minneapolis with my wife and our two children. St. Mary’s University, B.A., Education K-8 with emphasis on Mathematics, 2000; Marygrove College, M.A., Art of Teaching Middle School Mathematics, 2009; member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; ten years teaching experience.
I am a middle Math school teacher. I teach Algebra, General Mathematics, and Honors courses. I find that the student willing to learn to be the most successful, but the student unwilling to learn to be the reason I started teaching. I want to help all students understand the power that math knowledge can provide to those that truly understand its potential. The career opportunities available to those comfortable with the subject of Math are innumerable. Let the power of Math help you understand how the world works. I make a guarantee to ALL my students that they will not FAIL any of my courses, if they make the following FOUR promises: 1) I will listen. 2) I will always try. 3) I will never give up. 4) I will always ask questions to gain understanding.
I am a high school mathematics teacher in Southern California who absolutely loves to make math meaningful and memorable to my students. I currently teach Algebra 1 to 9th and 10th graders, and Math Analysis Honors to 11th and 12th graders. I teach using a "Flipped Classroom" model, where my students receive instruction at home via video and then come to class ready to discuss, think and work together, and solve problems. Outside of teaching, I enjoy relaxing with my husband, reading fiction, going on walks, and watching our favorite shows on Hulu.
Co-founder of eduCanon. We just launched our platform on September 3rd and I'm looking to learn from the great educators on Sophia to see how we can make eduCanon work best for the flipped classroom. eduCanon is an online learning platform for teachers to build and share interactive video lessons. Teachers can take any video content on YouTube and make it more active through time-embedded formative assessments. eduCanon.com
