Hello! Anthony here! I hold degrees in Education with a Specialization in Mathematics, as well as in German Studies, both from the University of Minnesota Duluth. I am licensed to teach mathematics in the state and Minnesota, and am currently enrolled in a Masters of Education program specializing in Instructional Design for Online Learning. My program is through Capella University. My educational experiences are varied. In addition to working in Duluth Public Schools, I have worked as a Tutor with the AVID program in the Saint Paul Public Schools, as well as a Math Teacher and Department Lead for LearningWorks at Blake, an enrichment program for middle schoolers in Minneapolis Public Schools. I began contracting for Sophia in October 2011, and have enjoyed every minute. I authored content for the Sophia Pathways, helped organize the taxonomy for the many different levels of math we have on the site, and reviewed many of the quiz items you see next to our math concepts. I have also authored some screencasts for our College Algebra Pathway. I'm currently working for Sophia as an Academic Support Coordinator for Sophia Pathways for College Credit. I help facilitate the production and review of the video tutorials that go into our SPCC courses. I get to use technology everyday to reach teachers and learners around the globe. Plus, I'm always exercising and learning new skills. Could it get any better?
I graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S in Chemistry and Mathematics along with an education certification. My career began in Utah teaching junior high math and high school chemistry. I spent 22 years in the classroom as a science teacher in the Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan School District. I have taught physics, AP, honors, general and concept level Chemistry. Currently, I am a Professional Development Specialist working in the School of Education at Capella University. During the summer, I facilitate week long workshops for new and experienced chemistry teachers at Hamline University with Prof. Matt Morgan. As a team, we cover content as well as current best practices in the science classroom including inquiry and digital resources. I am also employed by the College Board as an AP Chemistry Consultant where I facilitate day-long to week-long workshops for classroom teachers. I believe one of the best ways to improve my professional practice is to network with teachers from all over the country and I enjoy the opportunities this provides.
I am a digital business analyst here at Sophia. I have a B.S. in Computer Science from Mankato State University. I am also the mother of 3 teenagers, all with very different learning styles. Therefore, when I am not working on Sophia, I am helping with homework, studying for tests and supplying all the materials necessary for countless projects. Working with my children has given me a new appreciation for how many different ways there are to learn things. It has become very clear to me that what works for one child does not always work for another. I am inspired by the potential of Sophia to teach people in a way that makes sense to them, as well as provide a platform for people to share their knowledge.
I am currently pursuing a BS in computer science and geology, at the University of Utah. My 10 greatest loves in life are: spelling bees, obscure imported european techno, delicious food, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Veronica Mars, 24, Alias, science, math and art history. I hope to contribute to and gain from this site, as I know it is really hard to learn something the first time and making that easier for myself and others is simply a brilliant idea!
I am originally from a small town called Vacherie in Louisiana. I received my bachelor’s degree in education from the University of New Orleans and after teaching high school math for 4 years, returned to UNO for a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. I then began my PhD work at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and finally completed that in 1989. I have taught an online elementary statistics course for St. Leo University (Florida) for several years. I am currently employed as an instructor in the mathematics department at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, where I teach a variety of intro level mathematics course from developmental to college algebra.
