Online lesson sparks science celebrity visit for Prince George’s school

Greenbelt Elementary School students received an electrifying surprise Monday as they were entertained — and educated — by none other than Bill Nye the Science Guy. Television celebrity educator William “Bill” Nye, clad in his trademark bow tie and lab coat, performed science demonstrations for students as part of the school’s reward for winning a monthly drawing through the websitewww.Sophia.org, which offers free tutorial videos for secondary school students and professional development for teachers. Users accessing the videos could enter a monthly drawing to win a free iPad tablet computer or the grand prize, 30 iPads and a visit from Nye.

Education Platform Addresses Issue of College Readiness and Affordability with Free Resources and Low-Cost Online Courses for College Credit MINNEAPOLIS, May 13, 2013 - With the cost of higher education skyrocketing and two-thirds of today's students unprepared academically for college, SOPHIA.org has launched Operation College Success to offer free tools to help address the issue of college readiness and affordability. Sophia Pathways for College Credit Courses Receive ACE Credit Recommendation

Five courses from Sophia Pathways for College Credit (SPCC) have received recommendations from the American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE Credit). Launched in fall 2012 and designed to be significantly cheaper than traditional college courses, SPCC classes are self-paced, open for enrollment at any time, Web-based, and include online course materials in the original price. Featuring Sophia's "Many Ways to Learn" model, each course also includes individual concepts "taught by a variety of different instructors each with their individual style, so students can choose one that works best for them," according to a company news release.
