Course description

Altering a recipe, planning a road trip, getting the best deal when shopping, and financing college— what do all these things have in common? An understanding of numbers and how to use and interpret them. In the workplace, fields such as business, technology, and criminal justice all depend on math. In this course, you will learn how to apply mathematics in a way that will positively inform your world. Learn how to use straightforward approaches for fundamental math and algebra to create meaning and see the world in a new way by exploring the following topics: real numbers, linear equations and inequalities, exponential and logarithmic functions, finance, and probability and statistics.

Assessments and grading

This is a pass/fail course. You must complete 15 Challenge assessments (these are like quizzes) and 6 Milestone assessments (these are like tests) with an overall score of 70% or better.

Learning outcomes

<p>By the end of the course, you'll be able to:</p> <ul><li>Solve basic arithmetic equations.</li><li>Simplify multi-step algebraic expressions.</li><li>Evaluate arithmetic expressions involving fractions and decimals.</li><li>Perform conversions between decimals, fractions, and percents to solve real-world problems.</li><li>Solve linear algebraic equations.</li><li>Solve linear inequality word problems.</li><li>Use the slope-intercept form to identify coordinates, slope, and lines on a graph.</li><li>Apply properties of exponents to simplify an expression.</li><li>Evaluate and simplify radical expressions.</li><li>Solve exponential and logarithmic equations.</li><li>Examine common paycheck questions such as gross versus net pay, deductions, and tax implications.</li><li>Use the power of simple and compound interest to determine the true cost/benefit of loans and investments.</li><li>Use probability concepts and techniques in problem solving.</li><li>Apply statistical processes to analyze and infer from research scenarios and graphs.</li><li>Calculate measures of central tendency to solve real-world problems.</li></ul>
