I had some credits left to complete my BS degree but not enough time. I took this course and finished it within 4 days. The fact that the course is self-paced and easy to use, saved me. I knew nothing about any of the information here, but the course makes it easy and enjoyable. I like Ian the instructor, but I recommend you also check Sophia tutorials as there is a lot of required artwork. Some people complain about the questions formatting, but the questions are fine. This is not a difficult course, just a lot of info which needs time to sink in. Proctor is a pain in the neck. In one session I spoke to a dozen of them because none of them knew how to get my camera working, and worse, none of them was able to explain to me what is going on or why I'm waiting. Till the very end, one proctor figured it out after many trials. Two hours of needless proctor stress. I love Sophia courses and I hope they find a way to either improve this proctor phase or eliminate it.

This was my first Sophia course. There was a large amount of material to learn, but the content was very well organized. Unit 1 was much easier than the other units. I would say you should spend a good amount of time on Unit 2. When taking the final Milestone, utilize the glossary page (online tutorial) for each unit. Clicking on the word in the glossary takes you to that part of the course material. Good Luck!

It was an interesting class. I had to really study as there was a lot of information. Some of the PDF tutorials were incorrect as they were the same as the previous PDF tutorials thereby the needed information for the challenge questions and milestones were not available. Otherwise, great class.

EXTREMELY difficult course compared to the others I've taken. If this is a basic introductory Art History course, I recommend making it more of an overview.

It was a tough class, but it was worth it, Thanks Sophia for helping me achieve my BS in Psychology!!!! To All The Staff, Thanks A Bunch!!!!!!

Tough course if you don't like memorizing a bunch of artist names and matching them to art as well as memorizing types of architecture and what it's called.

This course is very informative. Not a bad course, Just didn't like the long set up for the Proctor U exam (takes too long).

Good class but too long and tedious.

  • Q: What does "Try it for Free" mean?

A: The Free Trial allows you to access the course of your choice, or multiple courses. It gives you access to the first unit ("Challenge 1") in the course. This will let you meet the course instructors, sample the instructional content, and answer a set of assessment questions in the Challenge. You can also read the Student Guide and watch an Orientation Video to learn more about the course format, requirements, and resources.

Any work you complete in the Free Trial is saved, so if you decide to register, you do not need to repeat it. Of course, we also let you reset it and start over if you wish.

  • Q: Does Sophia accept third-party payment for tuition, such as financial aid or military benefits?

A: Sophia courses are not eligible for most third party payment methods. Course tuition is paid by the student, using a credit or debit card. Tuition is due at the time of course registration. Sophia offers a payment plan option for course tuition.

  • Q: When do the courses start and how long do I have to complete a course?

A: You choose your own course start date and have 60 days from your chosen start date to complete each course. Sophia courses are self-paced, so many students complete a course in less than 60 days.

  • Q: Where do I get the textbooks for my course?

A: You do not need any textbooks for Sophia courses. All material is taught by video and text-based tutorials that are in the courseroom, and are included in the course tuition.

  • Q: How am I graded in the course?

A: Sophia courses are graded on a pass/fail basis, with 70% overall required to pass the course. Your score is based upon points earned in the formative assessments ("Challenges"), summative assessments ("Milestones"), and if applicable, the authentic assessments ("Touchstones"). Currently, our Foundations of English Composition, English Composition I, and Public Speaking courses contain Touchstones.

  • Q: How do I know which courses I should take?

A: Consult with your academic adviser at your university to determine specifically which Sophia courses could fit into your program. You can download the course syllabus directly from our site to share with your school advisor.

  • Q: Are the tests proctored?

A: Sophia courses utilize keyboard biometrics as an alternative to proctoring. No webcam is needed for a Sophia course.

  • Q: I'm taking a course where I have to submit Touchstones. How long does it take for my Touchstone to be graded once it's submitted?

A: We provide our faculty graders with up to 7 business days to grade a Touchstone. The actual time may vary based on volume and grader capacity.
